The AS480 is a half-wave, phase-controlled AVR that forms part of the excitation system of a brushless generator. Its design uses Surface Mount Technology (SMT), custom moldings and heat sinks to create a compact, durable AVR assembly. The AVR also includes an interface for the optional Excitation Boost System (EBS), which supports applications requiring short-circuit current maintenance.
The AVR links to the main stator windings and exciter field windings to provide closed-loop output-voltage control with ±1.0% load regulation. Its voltage-sensing terminals continuously sample the output windings, and the AVR adjusts the power delivered to the exciter field—and therefore the main field—to keep the generator’s output voltage within specified limits, compensating for load, speed, temperature, and power factor changes.
Efficient semiconductors in the power circuitry ensure positive voltage build-up from residual levels. A frequency-measuring circuit continually monitors generator output frequency and protects the excitation system from underspeed by proportionally reducing output voltage below a preset threshold. A manual UFRO adjustment allows factory setting and field selection between 50 Hz and 60 Hz via push-on link.
The AS480 offers a wide range of stability settings for different generator sizes and applications, including a “slow” setting for single- or twin-cylinder engines where lamp-flicker may occur. It also provides terminals for a remote voltage trimmer, giving users fine control of the generator’s output voltage.
